How to Play Isle of Reveries
Jump, sword, lantern, and the habits that keep Lief alive between screens.
Isle of Reveries plays like a Game Boy Color Zelda that finally grew a jump button. If you learned on Link’s Awakening or the Oracle games, most instincts transfer: walk off a screen edge, solve the room you are in, do not expect an open-world minimap to hold your hand. If you learned on Breath of the Wild, slow down. The skill is reading a single screen, not drawing a climbing line across a mountain.
This page is the mechanical how-to. Pair it with controls for the button diagram and with copy-spawn once the fairy joins. The embedded video is a short official puzzle-solving clip from the Kickstarter window. Later-area woods footage lives on Twilit Thicket; sword-block enemies and the Power Pogo live on combat.
Movement
Lief hops with a dedicated jump. desertcucco’s stated reason: you should not waste an item slot on a feather. On a typical gamepad that is a shoulder (RT/RB in the Kickstarter write-up). Jump is for ledges, pit lips, and staying above short enemy lunges. It is not a hover. Chain it with the lift tool when you need to toss a pot, and with stretchy mushrooms later when the Clawncher enters the kit.
Walking into a movable block pushes it. That was patched into the demo in January 2025 so the game feels like handheld Zelda instead of an action-RPG “press interact to shove.” If a block does not move, it is scenery, or you need to copy a different block from another room.
Lief cannot swim. Water tiles are fences. Demo players who try to hop into ponds will bounce off the idea. Look for a copyable platform, a redirected pipe, or a later item rather than mashing jump at the shoreline.
Combat
The sword is a short, honest arc. Hearts on the left of the HUD are your entire health pool; there is no stamina wheel and no flurry rush. Preview players noted that invulnerability after a hit is brief, so panic-rolling through a spike pit is a bad plan. Create space with jump, then swipe.
Copy-spawn is also a weapon. Official text literally asks: need to shoot an enemy from a distance? Copy the arrow-shooter. Spike-and-slingshot combos appear in desertcucco’s own clips. If a room spawns a turret-like statue, assume you are meant to steal it, not only dodge it.
Trinkets can grant temporary buffs after a clean kill streak (the Kickstarter mentioned five-plus enemies without being hurt). They are extras, not a build tree. Swap them at the trading post when you find one; do not hoard as if this were a loot ARPG.
Inventory thinking
Screenshots show four face-button slots (labeled Y, X, B, A on an Xbox-style pad) plus LB. A comfortable default once the demo kit is complete:
- Sword on the button your thumb already rests on
- Lantern on a slot you can tap while walking into a dark room
- Fairy copy on a slot you can tap without taking your eyes off a switch
- Glove or later tool on the fourth face button
- Jump on a shoulder so it never replaces those four
You will reassign when a dungeon item arrives. The design intent is that dungeon items stay relevant in the overworld, so do not delete the Sanctum copy habit when you reach later temples on the dungeons guide.
Exploration habits
- Clear the room you can see. Secrets in this genre hide in pots, dark corners, and “useless” statues that are actually copy sources.
- When a door stays shut, mark which switch you have not weighted. Then check copy objects.
- Talk to everyone. Lief’s notebook tracks characters; township quests later depend on that social net. See NPCs.
- If you are lost in mist or a woods-like maze (playtesters joked about a “legally distinct Lost Woods”), walk methodically and look for unique tiles, not a GPS arrow.
Accessibility of difficulty
The game does not hold your hand — Electric Airship’s feature list says so. That is not the same as unfair. Most demo dead-ends are “you forgot the fairy” dead-ends. Take a screenshot of the HUD, confirm you still have copy assigned, then backtrack one screen. The demo walkthrough exists for the rooms that still refuse to parse.
Play sessions can be short. A single dungeon screen is a complete thought. That makes Isle of Reveries a good handheld game, which is why Steam Deck and Switch matter on the system requirements page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for pilgrims heading to the isle.
How do I jump in Isle of Reveries?
Use the dedicated jump button (a shoulder input on typical pads). It is not an item you equip. Full map on controls.
How do I push blocks?
Walk into them. A 2025 demo update removed the need to press a separate interact button for shoving.
Why do I keep dying to one hit?
I-frames are short and the sword is close range. Create space with jump or a copied turret instead of tanking.
Can Lief swim?
No. Treat water as a barrier until an item or a copied object gives you a path.
